10 years since Formation of Bore Riders Club
Tuesday, Oct 9th
It was after the October bores of 1997 that Donny Wright, Matt "Buffalo" Hammersley, Tom Wright and Danny Cartwright got together and formed the Bore Riders Club. Tom created boreriders.com, the web site to gather
information and spread interest amongst the small surfing sub culture of tidal bore surfers.
Looking back it seems such a different time. There was an extraordinary buzz in the air. We were moving towards the close of the century and the Total Eclipse of the Sun in 1999. To a lot of people there was talk of more travel and cheap living on the road, following one's own Path. The dawning of a New Age. At the time my Path was surfing and skating longboards and exploring every part of the British coastline from North Yorkshire to North Wales and Ireland in Old Red my 1972 Transit living van.
Surfing the bore was for me an epic experience, generally lone surfing. Then I met Matt in 97. It was on the central reservation of the dual carriageway at Over Bridge, where I used to park for the bore that Matt and I got talking after the September bores. You can't park there now! I remember there were three other guys, two Kiwis and an Aussie. We brewed up in Old Red after the bore and as they say the rest is history.
I wrote a lot of stuff back then and documented the point at which we formed the Bore Riders Club in the final paragraph of Extract 6 from The Other Side of Life.
